Honda China Announces the Launch of its First Global EV Factory
Honda, a renowned automotive manufacturer, has recently inaugurated its first global electric vehicle (EV) factory, the Dongfeng Honda EV Factory, in Wuhan. This marks a significant milestone for Honda as it seeks to expand its electric vehicle production capacity and accelerate its transition towards sustainable mobility.
The new facility boasts an annual manufacturing capacity of 120,000 vehicles. Spanning approximately 630,000 square meters, this state-of-the-art plant is strategically located within Wuhan's Economic and Technological Development Zone. It is poised to produce a variety of electric models, including the Elegance L and Radiant S7, among others, contributing to Honda's growing lineup of electric vehicles.
Honda's Ambitious Roadmap for EVs in China
Honda is committed to enhancing its presence in the Chinese market with electric vehicles. By 2027, the company plans to introduce a total of 10 electric models, encompassing the recently unveiled e:N Series and the upcoming Radiant brand, showcasing its dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility.
For the long term, Honda aims to achieve a complete shift to electric vehicle sales by 2035, reflecting its strategic vision for a greener future.
Strategic Shift in China's Market Focus
In July, Honda announced a strategic adjustment in its China operations, aiming to reduce its conventional gasoline car production capacity by 30%. This measure involves the optimization of existing facilities and the reduction of approximately 500,000 annual production units, equivalent to one-tenth of Honda's global output. By scaling down gasoline car production to 1,000,000 units from the current 1,490,000, Honda is positioning itself for a more focused approach on electric vehicle production in China.
Future Plans for Honda's EV Expansion
Honda continues to invest in its future through the development of new EV production capacities. The Guangdong Honda EV Factory is expected to commence operations in November 2024, further solidifying Honda's commitment to electrification and sustainability.
